THANKS to some incisive fast bowling from the left- hand pacer Delorn Johnson, the Darren Sammy led Windward Islands walked away with the third place position, following a commanding victory over Barbados at the Kensington Oval last night.
Johnson rocked the host team’s batting lineup to end with 5 for 5, the best bowling figures in Regional CT20 cricket, as Barbados who win the toss and opted to take strike for the second successive game, displayed a pathetic batting attitude before being bowled out for 101 from their 20 overs.
The 24 year old Johnson rocked the Bajans, who lost the wickets of Kirk Edwards (01), Dwayne Smith (03) along with Shane Dowrich and Kevin Stoute who both failed to score, to be 7 for 4 after three overs, with Johnson’s figures reading 3-2-2-3.
Jonathan Carter who topscored with 42 (53balls, 3×6, 2×4) and Alcindo Holder 24 (28balls, 2×4, 1×6) added 68 for the fifth wicket from 12.5 overs, with Carter hitting Sebastien for two sixes in one over, while Holder struck Sammy for his lone six shortly after.
When Holder was run out by Devon Smith at the non-striker’s end off a Johnson Charles’ no-ball, followed by the loss of Carter, who was bowled by Charles two balls later, along with that of Ashley Nurse (00) Barbados, who had earlier in the tournament restricted their opponents for under 100, were in trouble at 79 for 7.
Some lusty hitting from Suleiman Benn who struck Sebastien for a six over wide long on in his 13, guided Barbados past the 100 run mark before Johnson returned to mop up the tail, while surpassing Ravi Rampaul’s 5 for 9 taken against the Leeward Islands earlier in the tournament.
Shillingford and Charles offered support to Johnson with a wicket each, before the Windward Islands’ reply got off to a disastrous start, losing Charles, their most productive batsman and the tournament’s highest run scorer, caught by Benn at second slip of the first delivery bowled by Fidel Edwards.
Devon Smith and Andre Fletcher repaired the damage with a 67 runs second wicket partnership, with Devon Smith hitting four fours in his 34, before he was run out by Dowrich after setting off for a single off Benn, with the ball being stuck in Dowrich’s pads.
Miles Bascombe joined Fletcher and watched from the non-striker end as the pugnacious opener struck Fidel Edwards over wide midwicket for six, before he was bowled by Best for 42 which was accumulated off 39 balls and decorated with two fours and one six, with Windward Islands 85 for 3 in the 15th over.
Tade Carmichael, who was playing his first game in the tournament, joined Bascombe and after he was given a life by Stoute off Best, said thank you by dispatching the final delivery from the fiery fast bowler to wide mid on for four ..
Fittingly, Carmichael who struck an unbeaten 13 off seven deliveries sealed the win for his team when he scooped Nurse to the vacant third man position for his second boundary, as Windwards reached 105 for 3 from 17.5 overs, with Bascombe being the other batsman unbeaten on 7.
Fidel Edwards and Best took one wicket for 15 and 25 runs respectively, but judging from Johnson’s burst earlier in the match, which landed him the Star-of-the-match award, Barbados’ bowling lineup found it difficult to defend a small total once again.
