New Year needs new attitudes

THE New Year needs new attitudes from both the Guyanese politicians and public. The government must spend its time promoting, expanding, and explaining their policies to gain the support of all stakeholders, rather than trying to show what may or may not be the opposition shortcomings. It is expected that the opposition will try to both get their houses in order and to form some agreement on shared positions. The government needs only to explain delays, like the tripartite talks and their effects simply, factually and quietly and leave it up to the public to react.
The government must continue what appears to be a robust attempt to show that it is working towards  progress, and not waiting for the next Parliament. It is also important that the president insist that public officials be more proactive in planning, implementing and monitoring their areas of responsibilities. At least half of their time needs to be spent on these three functions. It would be helpful if the government speak with one respectful voice, whenever possible. The government has the responsibility, but Parliament has the power. It is up to the government to work with them to use it in the nation’s best interest.
