Experienced Alpha United lift inaugural GFA/Banks Beer Cup

… Beacon finish third
ALPHA United won the GFA Banks Beer Cup on New Year’s night when they braved the soggy conditions to edge Fruta Conquerors 1-0, to lift the inaugural Georgetown Football Association (GFA)-organised Banks DIH/Banks Beer Knockout Cup tournament.
In the third place playoff, Beacon overcame a spirited attack from Sunburst Camptown to come out winners with a 3-0 score line that earned them $750 000 while the losers received $250 000 for their fourth-place finish.
Andrew Murray’s 80th minute strike sealed the game for the ‘Hammer’ men who walked away with the $3M top prize, after a brutal attack under soggy conditions, followed by crowd encroachment during the game. Experience prevailed over youth.
Fruta had only themselves to blame, being forced to settle for the runner-up prize of $1.5M, as they squandered a few goal-scoring opportunities, with Pernell Schultz, Jermaine Junior and Gerald Grittens all missing clear-cut chances in the first half of the game.
Alpha, on the other hand, forced themselves with their experience and speed through their flanks with crosses, followed by long plays up centre field, which enabled Murray and company to attack.
The presentation ceremony will take place on Friday at the Banks DIH Thirst Park Sports Club at a time to be announced later.
