Victoria Kings win Mackeson East Coast League

… Ansa McAl hands over spoils; pledges continued support
VICTORY Kings Football Club, sponsored by San Jorge Investment, was once known as not only the powerhouse of football on the East Coast of Demerara, but one of the leading clubs in Guyana.
The club had fallen off a bit but recently regrouped and are on a campaign trail to return to their glory days in the sport. Their demolition of the recently concluded Mackeson East Demerara Football Association (EDFA) is their way saying ‘we’re back’.
Kings played 14 games in the ten-team tournament that had two rounds. They (Victoria Kings) only lost one game, drew three and won ten in the most devastating manner, scoring a massive 40 goals while conceding only four, amassing 33 points.
Their biggest margin of victory came in the games against Golden Grove whom they defeated nine goals to nil in each round.
Buxton United finished third in the tournament and were the only team to have defeated the champions.
During Victoria Kings’ excellent run, former National player Winston Pompey finished the league as the highest goalscorer with 14 while his team mate Aubrey Gibson scored the second highest with 11 and Shawn Daniels nine.
Buxton Stars finished second with eight wins, five draws and one loss. Twenty goals were scored in the process while five were scored against them. They accumulated 29 points.
Buxton United, though having more wins than their fellow village team, had to settle for third place since they had four losses, scored 32 goals and 14 against and ended on 28 points.
Meanwhile, at yesterday’s presentation ceremony at the Ansa McAl head office in Beterverwagting (BV), Darshnie Yusuf, the company’s Marketing Representative stated that they were delighted about the smooth running of the tournament and expressed their desire to continue working with the EDFA in making the League one of the premier football events on the East Coast of Demerara.
She added that next year, Ansa McAl is planning to do more for football on the East Coast – a statement that was greeted with cheers by the association’s secretary Sherry Abrams.
Abrams, a well-known advocate for development of the game on the East Coast corridor, believed that the infusion of Ansa McAl to their football has brought about change in the attitude of players since they were given something to look forward too.
She mentioned that the EDFA will always be grateful to the distribution company for their interest in football in the various villages.
“We were struggling before Ansa McAl came along; I’m not saying that no one else gave to us, but now we are very certain about having a few tournaments sponsored by them (Ansa McAl). It’s always great when a big company like this can make sure that there’s always football being played up here (East Coast),” Abrams said.
