FORMER prison escapee Paul Kirton, of Smythfield, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was ordered to post $50,000 bail yesterday, on a charge of being in possession of forged United States (U.S.) currency. He appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, in the New Amsterdam Court and the case was postponed, to February 20, 2012, for report and fixture.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said, on November 11 last, ranks on mobile patrol in Smythfield stopped the defendant, a known character and a search of his person yielded counterfeit US$100 notes, amounting to US2,500 in his left side pants pocket.
On August 25, 2007, at New Amsterdam Prison, Kirton was among 18 prisoners, aided with a makeshift ladder that climbed over a concrete fence and jumped into the adjoining farm, before being recaptured hours later.
