POLICE on Friday reported that three men were arrested for disturbing the Peoples Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) during a public meeting at the Stabroek Market Square. The PPP/C meeting commenced at about 18:30 hrs and was in progress when a crowd of about 200 persons, some of whom were carrying photographs of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Presidential Candidate, David Granger, some with APNU flags and others with APNU jerseys, converged in the area and began heckling the speakers.
They were spoken to by the police to desist from their behaviour but continued, resulting in the three men being arrested. During efforts by a policewoman to arrest a female who was also disturbing the meeting, persons crowded around and they both fell to the ground. The woman was then taken away from the police rank by persons in the crowd.
The three men have been warned and sent away.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that riot police ranks were not dispatched to the area as stated by the Stabroek News in its publication today Saturday, November 19, 2011. The ranks referred to were members of a police patrol on their way to perform road block duties when they responded to a call to assist the ranks at the meeting.
