No place for divisive politics in Guyana’s future
-cohesion’s the way to go
A GUYANA that is divided; a Guyana that succumbs to divisive politics being propagated is a Guyana with a troubled future says Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon.
Luncheon, who made the observation Wednesday evening at a public meeting in Kitty, said:
“We have made it our policy to build national unity, and we have succeeded…we have lost three decades…we know what we lost, and what we have today we ain’t giving up.”
He maintained that the baseless assertion that Guyana is now worse off than before is an insult to Guyanese who had lived for decades in misery.
‘We have made it our policy to build national unity, and we have succeeded… We have lost three decades…we know what we lost, and what we have today, we ain’t giving up’ |
“We have fought the good fight, we have a lot to be proud of, and we look confidently into the future,” Luncheon said.
According to him, national unity has always been a priority under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), and over the years, the Guyanese people have been brought together.
Unstoppable
“We knew that the Guyanese people, once united, would be unstoppable…Our future lies in the preservation of national unity in Guyana,” Luncheon said. He added that the PPP/C have brought hope to the Guyanese people. “When you have a government that can bring unity to the fore, then progress and development (are) unstoppable…this is what the PPP/C offers to the Guyanese people,” Luncheon said.
According to him, the successes that Guyanese enjoy have been supported by the average Guyanese, the people of Guyana – the bedrock of the PPP/C. “It is you who have put your heads and hearts behind the PPP/C.” he said.
Luncheon made clear that the agreement the incumbent party made with the Guyanese people has been honoured. “We were at a time when there was no hope, but the leadership of the PPP/C guided us through the dark times, and we prevailed; the people prevailed, the PPP/C prevailed,” he said.
Luncheon observed that, come Elections Day, Guyanese have an opportunity that must not be wasted.
No reversal
He made it clear that the PPP/C’s progress must have no reversal. Rather, November 28 must be used to build on what was achieved in 2006 and 2001 and 1997 and 1992.
“Our fight has not ceased; our fight is against the manifestations of bias and prejudice…They (the opposition) ask us to be blind and to be deaf, and to not sense and see and know the progress that has occurred from 1992 to now,” Luncheon said.
He maintained that the Guyanese people and the PPP/C have endured and are prepared for any card played by the opposition forces.
“Our legacy has been fighting to prevent an opposition from coming into office to visit their stewardship and disunity on the Guyanese people,” Luncheon stressed. “This is why the PNC is dead. They never learn. The practices of the opposition show that they have nothing to offer except more of the past.”
He warned against those who preach racism and disunity, making it clear that those who do so will be dealt with condignly by the PPP/C and the Guyanese people.
“We can’t afford a reversal. We can’t contemplate a reversal. We can’t even imagine a reversal,” Luncheon lamented.
He stated that real progress is threatened by those who want to destroy national unity.
“We must see through the lies and the division and understand that what they offer is nothing,” he said. “We must keep vigilant eyes as they try to beguile us with their versions of the truth,” Luncheon said.
Strong record
He maintained that the PPP/C has a strong record, an irrefutable record, over the last two decades, of massive successes that could not have been accomplished without national unity.
“The people are now confident in their government. The people have hope for the future…We say it could have never happened without national unity,” Luncheon said.
According to him, the support for the PPP/C and its record of successes has been translated into the support of the Guyanese people who have gone the extra mile to show that national unity exists.
“The PPP/C was trusted. We delivered, and we are committed,” he said, adding that the incumbent party has a vision, and national unity is where it begins and ends.
“Guyana is good today, but it will be even better tomorrow,” he said.
