PPP/C seeking to take Guyana to greater heights
– Ramotar
THE People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Presidential Candidate for the November 28 general elections, Mr. Donald Ramotar has pledged that, once given the opportunity, his government will continue to build on the many achievements of the last 20 years, to take Guyana to greater heights. A modernised sugar industry, expansion of other sectors and increased growth through initiatives, such as the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project and the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) projects, are among the accomplishments, he promised.
Ramotar was speaking at a public meeting at Whim, Corentyne, Berbice, on a platform shared with President Bharrat Jagdeo, Tuesday evening, when he added his criticism of Moses Nagamootoo, who hails from there.
Ramotar said Nagamootoo was with the Justice Party, which, in 1964, joined with the People’s National Congress (PNC) to remove the Cheddi Jagan Government.
“Nagamootoo was one of the people who worked to remove us in 1964. He was a candidate for the Justice Party. Today he claims that he is Cheddi Jagan’s disciple but he was one of the men responsible for the destruction of our country by joining the Justice Party,” Ramotar charged.
He said the PPP/C is advancing into the next elections on solid footing.
“Comrades, Berbice has always stood with the PPP and Berbice will continue to stand with the PPP,” Ramotar asserted.
He said Guyana kept going in difficult times, most recent of which was the global economic crisis, when other countries were falling.
The Presidential Candidate pointed out that at the centre of all advancement was the Guyanese people, which is in keeping with Dr. (Cheddi) Jagan’s legacy of development with a human face.
Ramotar urged: “We must vote solidly and allow progress to continue.”
Bigger picture
He assured that the PPP/C will continue to resist the negatives and remain focused on the bigger picture, working together for a better tomorrow for all Guyanese.
Outlining the PPP/C plans for the next five years, Ramotar said the emphasis will be on education.
According to him, the new economy being built by the incumbent will see education playing an increasingly larger role and the investments in the sector are expected to rank Guyana among the top educated nations.
He stressed that the promises made in the party’s manifesto are not just promises but rather the outline of a vision for Guyana.
Ramotar observed that the other political parties have made bold statements that are bordering on the unrealistic, about lowering the Value Added Tax (VAT) and increasing wages and salaries.
“How are they going to pay for all of this?” he wondered.
Ramotar said the PPP/C has made consistent investments across Guyana in every sector in a strategic manner to ensure the development and transformation of the nation.
“We are not making idle promises,” he declared.
Earlier, President Bharrat Jagdeo’s acknowledgment that the PPP/C has kept faith with the Guyanese people drew the cheers of thousands of supporters at the Whim public meeting.Encouraged by the reaction, the Head of State emhpasised that the Administration will fight to ensure that Guyana continues on the road to progress.
“The PPP/C is about progress….we look to the future…we do not sit on our hands or boast, we look to moving forward…the PPP/C believes in continued progress…we will fight to move Guyana forward,” Jagdeo posited.
The President said the incumbent party has always put the interest of Guyana and the Guyanese people first, the result of which is the country’s massive transformation in the last two decades.
Qualified professionals
Jagdeo said that, unlike other political parties, the PPP/C boasts a membership of qualified professionals who work for Guyana’s people and continued progress.
Taking a swipe at the Alliance for Change (AFC), he said one executive member, Mr. Sasenarine Singh has a history of theft, which caused him to be fired from five jobs.
Challenging Singh to refute this, the Head of State said he had put another AFC executive member, herbalist Mr. Veerasammy Ramayya, on alert that the law will catch up with “quack doctors”.
Jagdeo remarked that the PPP/C members are people who work out of genuine dedication and not for the sake of power.
He also lashed out at Nagamootoo, stating that, in his obsession for power, over the last decade he has not “lifted a pin” in support of the PPP/C.
Jagdeo added that Nagmootoo’s disposition in the last years has been ‘my way or no way’.
“If he doesn’t get his way, he walks out.”
Referring to claims that Nagamootoo was promised a Vice-Presidency, the Head of State asked, if the ex-PPP member lied on the Father of the Nation, on who else would he not.
“Janet Jagan had the memory of an elephant and I am not senile and I don’t remember and Janet never remembered this. Moses was lying again,” he said.
Jagdeo also refuted Nagamootoo’s contention that the legacy of Cheddi Jagan has died and said it will be alive with the PPP/C.
“He thinks he has a monopoly on Cheddi Jagan’s legacy…This man is an egotist, he has an ego bigger than this whole Whim. He thinks he’s special so he wants to be leader of the party … he can’t play a supportive member role,” Jagdeo said.
The Head of State said the PPP/C is focused on the future and progress and will fight to move Guyana further.
“The PPP/C is made of stronger stuff,” he offered.
Jagdeo observed that Presidential Candidate Ramotar knows the meaning of struggle and will fight to bring greater freedoms and continued progress to all Guyanese people.
