Python bites more’n she could chew

A 16-foot Burmese python was captured in South Florida with a surprise inside for those who captured it. When the men who captured the snake cut it open, they found a fully intact deer. The snake was said to have bitten the deer and collapsed him under his weight.
The snake was the largest ever found in Florida.
According to the South Florida Water Management District, the snake, which was a female, weighed 215.4 pounds with the deer, and 139.1 pounds without it.
The girth of the reptile’s stomach, stretched to accommodate the carcass, measured a whopping 44.1 inches.
From head to tail, it measured 15.65 feet.

Lucky ranger saved from jaws of death
A GAME ranger is lucky to be alive after he was ‘pulled out’ of a lion’s jaws in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the SA National Parks said Wednesday.
Albert Bojone was attacked by a lion on Tuesday, but was not seriously injured, spokeswoman Henriëtte Engelbrecht said.
Bojone broke a thumb and was recovering at a clinic in Upington.
He and two other men were on the Botswana side of the park, planning to catch and bring back three local Kalahari lions that had slipped over the border.
One of the lions had caught a cow and was shot dead by a farmer. The other two were also eventually put down by parks personnel, since they had become aggressive.
Engelbrecht said: “Part of (a ranger’s) conservation duty is to keep track of our lions. A certain area of the Botswana side (of the transfrontier park) is not fenced at all, and animals move freely from South Africa to Botswana.”
The three predators formed one group. Rangers believed they belonged to the same pride.
“They were like brothers, but were extremely aggressive. It could be that they don’t see people often, or they were traumatised,” Engelbrecht said.
Bojone, an experienced ranger, was standing on the back of a pickup truck, and his two colleagues were seated in the front of the vehicle as they approached the surviving big cats. Suddenly, one of the lions jumped on to the bakkie.
“It grabbed his (Bojone’s) arm, but then the lion lost a little control and fell back. Bojone jumped and scrambled to get on to the roof of the bakkie,” according to Engelbrecht.
The cat then grabbed at Bojone’s foot. “He tried to kick the lion off him …, ” Engelbrecht said.
Researcher Graeme Ellis, seated in front of the vehicle, scrambled out and went to help.
“He risked his life and pulled Bojone out of the jaws of the lion and into the (cab of the) bakkie.”
The lion had a firm grip, and “Bojone was pulled out of his boot …”
When the attacker was shot dead, it still had the boot in its jaw, Engelbrecht said.
The third lion also had to be shot dead, as it was very aggressive.
Rangers’ usual technique in handling lion attacks on vehicles is to toss a blanket on the beast.
“They would normally fight with the blanket and then get tired and give up,” Engelbrecht said. (Sowetan)

Zimbabwean man romances donkey
A ZIMBABWEAN man was busted last Sunday around 4a.m. while penetrating a donkey tied to a tree in his backyard.
The man, 28-year-old Sunday Moyo from Mandava township in Zvishavane, admitted to the court that it indeed must have looked bad… but, hear him out! Only a few hours earlier, the donkey was a human prostitute.
“Your worship, I only came to know that I was being intimate with a donkey when I got arrested,” Moyo said, adding:
“I had hired a prostitute and paid US$20 for the service at a downtown night club, and I don’t know how she then became a donkey.”
According to The Herald, he also claimed to be in love.
“I think I am also a donkey,” Moyo said. “I do not know what happened when I left the bar, but I am seriously in love with her [the donkey].”
Moyo was charged with bestiality, and ordered to undergo examination by two court psychiatrists.
As for the donkey, she has mostly forgotten about the incident, and contented herself munching on a juicy apple.

Man survives leopard attack
A MAN has told how he battled a leopard with his bare hands for 10 minutes after the reclusive animal plunged its paws into his thighs.
Mehleli Ndlovu, 25, was herding cattle at Dandasi Farm in Shangani – 100km from Bulawayo on the Gweru highway – when the animal leapt out of the bushes and grabbed a calf.
As the leopard dragged the calf away, Ndlovu’s four dogs charged at it, forcing it to abandon its meal and go for him instead. His neighbour’s son, 12, managed to flee the scene.
Ndlovu, employed as a general hand on the farm, said: “It was at about 6pm, and I was driving the cattle to the pens. My dogs spotted the leopard, which had just killed a calf, and rushed to attack it.
“I heard the roar of the leopard as it came for me; I had little time to react. It bit my thigh with its sharp teeth, and pushed me to the ground. I was carrying an axe, but it slipped from my hands.
“While I was still on the ground, the animal stood right on top of me and tried to bite my face and chest. I blocked it with my hands, resulting in the further injuries on my arms and right palm.”
Ndlovu was treated for his injuries at Shangani Hospital, 12km away, before being referred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for further treatment after the October 20 attack.
He spoke from Bulawayo on Thursday as he continued his treatment. Without his brave dogs, he insists, he would not have pulled through.
“The animal was very powerful, and I don’t think I could have made it without the dogs. While I struggled to free myself, we both rolled on the ground… and the dogs were there, attacking the animal. The whole thing must have lasted 10 minutes, after which the leopard let go,” he said.
The leopard was seen a few days later limping, and its fate is unknown.

Originally from Gwanda, Ndlovu said his encounter with the leopard followed several reports in the area of disappearing domestic animals. Attacks on humans were, however, rare, he added.
“However, the area is becoming dangerous, and I think something must be done before people lose their lives,” said Ndlovu, who had two of his dogs wounded while battling the leopard.
Dandazi is slightly over 30km from a massive conservancy area, and wild animals routinely stray into neighbouring farms.
