TWO admirable performances by Trinidad and Tobago’s Rayad Emrit and Jason Mohammed propelled their team to a four-wicket victory over Guyana’s Amazon Conquerors last evening at the Guyana National Stadium and into the final of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Super50 Competition. The semi-final match saw Guyana winning the toss and taking first strike as they got to 200-9 in their allotted 50 overs. T&T then comfortably reached their target of 201 in 46.1 overs losing six wickets in the process.
The Twin-island Republic will now meet the winner of the Jamaica/Sagicor HPC match which is to be contested to from 13:30hrs today at the same venue.
Emrit led Trinidad with a terrific bowling performance of 4-39 from nine overs then returned to support with the bat as he made a positive 17. Jason Mohammed, on the other hand, was the rock of the T&T batting innings as he was left unbeaten on 65 as he steered his side to victory.
As T&T pursued their target, Guyana started well as Steven Jacobs removed William Perkins without scoring with his final ball of the first over, T&T were 0-1. Daren Ganga and Justin Guillen took the score to 47 before Ganga was also bowled by Jacobs.
Guillen stood firm, scoring heavily, while Dwayne Bravo at the other end was dropped on six by Jacobs at mid-off but he was removed for eight by a brilliant catch at first slip by Travis Dowlin in slips and T&T were 75-3.
The right-handed opener, Guillen reached his 50 in 69 balls as he laced his innings with six boundaries. He reached 63 before being caught at midwicket by Dowlin off Royston Crandon. Sherwin Ganga (1) followed soon after with the score on 106 as T&T lost their fifth wicket.
Emrit and Mohammed, with a 54-run sixth-wicket partnership, took the score to 161 then the pair had a mix-up in the middle which resulted in the departure of Emrit for 17.
Mohammed and Kevin Cooper, who made an unbeaten 17, took T&T over the line.
Earlier in the day, the opening pair of Trevon Griffith and Assad Fudadin were separated early when the latter played a half-hearted flick off Samuel Badree and was caught just inside the long-on boundary by Cooper, without scoring, Guyana were 4-1
Johnson then joined Griffith in the middle and took the score to 22 before Griffith was caught at cover by Jason Mohammed off Shawn Emrit, who struck just after being dispatched for two boundaries by Johnson and one by Griffith in the same over.
The Guyanese batsmen, Johnson and Travis Dowlin were very watchful even as T&T clamped down on the scoring. Guyana found themselves at 24-2 in the tenth over and 49-2 at the conclusion of the 20th over.
Dowlin (17) met his demise two balls into the 21st over when he edged one from Sunil Narine to Bravo at first slip. This brought Jacobs to the middle. Johnson and Jacobs put on a much-needed partnership of 81 which kept the scoreboard ticking over as Guyana scored at just over three runs per over.
Johnson registered an excellent half-century which was laced with four fours and two maximums but lost his wicket caught-and-bowled to Sherwin Ganga when he was on 66. Guyana were 130-4 with 12 overs to bat.
Jacobs fell on 32 as Guyana slumped to 150-5 in the 43rd over with Crandon and Barnwell in the middle looking for the boundaries. Barnwell (21) and Crandon (23) made some quick runs to push Guyana closer to the 200-mark. Guyana at this stage were 183-7.
Derwin Christian (8) and Jonathan Foo (6) came to the middle with less than two overs left in the innings and lost their wickets in the process of scoring quick runs.
Emrit was supported by the miserly Narine who finished with 2-26 from 12 overs; S. Ganga recorded 2-48 in 11 overs while Badree pitched in with one wicket.
