Minister Prashad meets with new Canadian High Commissioner

MINISTER of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Mr. Manniram Prashad, on Monday met with the newly accredited Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana Mr. David Devine. The High Commissioner paid Minister Prashad a courtesy call at his South Road office, in Georgetown.
The minister welcomed High Commissioner Devine to Guyana and wished him a successful and rewarding term of office.
Prashad acknowledged the longstanding and generous support provided to Guyana by the Government and people of Canada and said the country looks forward to further strengthening these ties. Guyana and Canada have over the years shared fruitful relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1966.
He highlighted the strong ties and relations, and opportunities established between the two countries over the years and made reference to promoting and deepening investment and trade links between the two countries.
It was also recognised that there is tremendous potential for expanding cooperation between the two countries and they can continue to build on the successes already achieved.
Minister Prashad highlighted opportunities in our growing tourism sector and also alluded to the fact that Guyana is now a known tourist destination with its ecological, nature and adventure-based tourism offerings.
A statement from the Tourism Ministry said the two officials also discussed the possibility of Canada lending its expertise and support by training specialists in various fields to help enhance Guyana’s human resource capacity and contribute towards the growth and transformation of the economy.
Ambassador Devine last month presented his credentials to His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo at State House, also in the city. He replaces Mr. Francois Montour who departed Guyana in early August at the end of his tour of duty here.
