House lot targets in Essequibo surpassed

THE unprecedented drive for housing in Guyana did not overrun Region 2, Essequibo Coast. One cannot build a house in the air or at sea, if land was not made available with necessary infrastructures. In Region 2, the process of making house lots available for all income groups has surpassed its targets. Presently, there are more than 500 house lots available in all the 14 housing schemes exclusive of the four schemes established by  Food for the Poor.
Pomona district has 250 house lots;  Onderneeming, 1,140; Suddie, 100;  Bush Lot, 60,;Anna Regina, 200; Henrietta, 100; Richmond 187; La Belle Alliance, 40; Lima, 125, Lima Sands, 690; Jib/Paradise, 85; Charity Scheme, 882. While about 95 per cent of the lots are occupied there are still about 500 house lots available for aspiring families.
According to the Regional Officer for Housing, the process of issuing titles is an ongoing process. Mr. Ramnauth said that persons who were allocated house lots must attempt to build a structure on the lot within one year. They must also keep the holding free from bush and establish proper identification. He said that persons who were allocated house lots cannot sell the lot within a period of 10 years and if such is done the legal fine is exorbitant.
Mr. Ramnauth said persons encountering problems for building must inform this office so that the process of reallocating house lots can be reviewed from a humanitarian aspect.
