Non Pariel carnal knowledge trial begins

JUSTICE Roxanne George and a mixed jury at the Demerara Assizes on Monday heard how accused Rajendra Gussai called ‘Jetley’ raped a 14-year old girl after invading her bedroom. The girl was at her home on September 4, 2004, next door to the accused home which was situated near to a mesh fence.
Leading prosecutor Ms. Konyo Sandiford told the jury in her opening address that she would introduce evidence to show that the girl who was alone at home  with her 12-year old brother, had just come from  her outside bath hut in the yard with a towel wrapped around her one Saturday afternoon about 16:30 hours. She entered her bedroom and while searching for clothing in her vanity she saw the accused in her bedroom. She asked him what he was doing there and he told her to shut up.
Witnesses, the prosecutor said, would testify that upon hearing what the accused had to say, the girl said that she would tell her father on him.
At this stage, the accused, it is said hurled the girl on to a bed and then he threw her to the floor and raped her.
When the accused finished he boldly left the home. Thereafter the girl continued crying and neighbours were alerted. The parents and police became involved, and the accused was subsequently arrested and charged.
In conclusion, the prosecutor told the jury: “In closing I wish to remind you Mr. Foreman, ladies and gentleman of the jury of the solemn oath you took and to remind you that in the exercise of your duty you must not have sympathy neither for the victim nor her family nor to have sympathy for the accused Rajendra Gussai Called ‘Jetley’. Instead you must execute your duty as dispassionately and as honestly as you can.
The hearing continues today before Justice Roxanne George and a mixed jury.
