Maxwell’s letter erroneous, serves only to misrepresent the issue

A LETTER written by M. Maxwell and published in the Kaieteur News of August 8, 2011, in which the writer asks whether Mr. Donald Ramotar suggested thatelections should be pushed into 2012 is highly erroneous and serves only to misrepresent the issue and create confusion in the minds of Guyanese. The fact that the newspaper chose to carry the letter without an Editor’s note, clarifying the issue, is no mystery to anyone who would have read the letter.
I think that any Guyanese listening to Mr. Ramotar’s statement would understand what he meant. Clearly, he expressed his concerns over  December elections which is a concern, I am sure, that every Guyanese share.
To use the same quote that Maxwell used in his letter, “If (December elections) is unavoidable because of the nature of the situation and the time of the situation then we have to have it. I don’t think it is desirable and I myself do not like it…”
How does this suggest that Mr. Ramotar might be advocating   2012 elections? The constitution is clear on the holding of elections by December this year, and to date, every official from the government and from the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has expressed the need for the elections to be held as per the Constitution.
From my understanding, what Mr. Ramotar was saying is that  December elections are not desirable, but it would be hoped that the elections can be held before December. However, if that is not possible then it will have to be held in December. He was not by any means saying that it should not be held in December and if it has to be then it can very well go over to 2012.
There are those, including M. Maxwell, who try to create mischief and should not be allowed to do so.
By misrepresenting statements on such issues, there is only one thing that can be gained – confusion and doubts and that is the motive behind these letters being published in the papers.
