Addressing the traffic situation in Guyana

I TAKE this opportunity to sincerely thank Minister Clement Rohee and team, for showing practical concern in the area of road safety, along the East Coast of Demerara. It is a most welcomed move, and even though more drivers could have shown up, the start was most positive. After all, one must not despise ‘small beginnings.’ Some of the issues discussed were driving under the influence, speeding, and a dress code for minibus drivers and conductors, erecting of speed humps on streets in communities, and animals on the roadways. These issues are very important, and I add this one: a code of conduct for the operators and commuters. This is my reason.

Many times, especially the uncouth group of drivers, conductors and passengers will hurl invectives and abuse, while driving. It seems to bring them (the perpetrators) a great deal of fun while driving. So the rude remarks are plenty. It is a small group that is guilty, but the idea of ‘nipping them in the bud’ will serve great benefit.
There is also another group: the ‘noise makers.’ These come from some buses, as well as some commuters who use their cell phone radios. They know this practice is wrong, and they ‘tone down’ or switch off, when accosted by the police. So, the drastic move, to strip the noisy buses and cars must be re-enforced rigidly. I really hope for a complete change of environment in this all-important industry. However, there is more to consider, Mr. Rohee.

I will keep saying that all your efforts may very well ‘go down the drain,’ unless and until the passengers themselves stand up for the rule of law. For example, when there is speeding and overloading, and passengers fail to object, they should be disciplined, along with the erring operators. Find some way of making them responsible and liable (when traffic laws are being flouted). You see, Honourable Minister, it is a new culture that is being ushered in, and no one wants  recidivism. Also, you and your lawmen cannot watch these law breakers all day. So the citizens have to do their part.

I close by again really commending you for this initiative. The one about a dress code is great, and that is so easy to enact. Also the erecting of speed bumps, on all the access roads is already tardy, and this will force drivers to cease from over accelerating in the villages. Thanks again!
