Man shot dead, brother wounded
ONE brother was last night reportedly shot dead and another in a critical condition at the New Amsterdam Hospital, following an altercation about a drainage ‘stop-off.’
A father and son from Alness Village are implicated in the shooting, according to a report on the Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com)
Authorities said 38-year old Shawn Fraser was shot to his head, abdomen, back, shoulder and other parts of his body. His brother, 33-year-old Odwin Bindha, is listed as serious at the New Amsterdam Hospital. Their sister, Kim Providence reportedly told Demwaves that Odwin sustained gunshots to his left side chest.
The incident is said to have occurred on a rice field at Hog Stye backdam where the men were spraying a rice field.
Police have since arrested a man and are looking for his son, as both of them allegedly opened fire separately on the brothers.
The shooting reportedly stemmed from a disagreement between the brothers and the two men over the alleged removal of a ‘stop-off’ that had been erected by Thomas and Bindha to allow the water to rise before pumping.
The father and son were asked why they removed the stop-off and, according to Providence, while her brothers were spraying, the men opened fire.
Other information, however, suggests that the incident might be linked to cattle rustling, said to be a major problem in the area.
Hog Stye is located on the Corentyne Coast about 85 miles east of Georgetown, the capital of Guyana.
