-resident doctor to be stationed in health centre compound
GOVERNMENT continues to ensure access to improved health care services in all communities across the country, and the historic village of Buxton is no exception.
This commitment saw a hefty sum being allocated by the Regional Administration and this was supplemented by an additional $1.5M from central government to enhance the Buxton Health Centre.
Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, visited the community on July 26. The doctor’s house, which is located behind the health centre, is currently undergoing major repairs; and once this is completed, a resident doctor will be stationed there to augment the efforts of the one that is currently functioning there. This new arrangement will see the working hours being staggered, allowing for the provision of health care services in the evening hours, Dr. Ramsaran said.
“This will be a relief to the working mothers and others, some of whom work as far away as Georgetown. The working people of this densely populated historic village and its environs will be able to access better health care without sacrificing gainful work time,” Minister Ramsaran explained.
This project is a pilot of the new approach that the Health Ministry intends to pursue at major health centres at strategic locations, based on the availability of the large numbers of graduate doctors from the visionary Guyana/Cuba Enhanced Cooperation initiated by President Bharrat Jagdeo and then President of Cuba, Fidel Castro, during a working visit in Havana in 2006.
Major repairs are also being undertaken at the Dr. CC. Nicholson Hospital, Nabaclis, which is part of the ministry’s effort in observance of International Year Of People of African Descent.
The ministry will be hosting a medical outreach and health fair at the Buxton Health Center on August 6 and 7. This event will see various health workers, along with specialist teams from the National Ophthalmology Hospital, Port Mourant and the Cheddi Jagan Dental School, providing services to residents.
