Broadcasting Bill expected to be passed on Thursday

THE long-awaited Broadcasting Bill, which makes provision for the establishment of the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority, will be read for the second time at today’s sitting of the National Assembly. It is expected that the Bill be passed today as well.
The Guyana Energy Authority (Amendment) Bill which will address inconsistencies and loop-holes with regard to fuel smuggling will also be tabled, according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon.
While it is government’s aim to ensure that the constitutional rights of Guyanese are enjoyed, the HPS said that legislation to create an authority which will ensure that national obligations under the convention in trade of endangered species are applied, will not be tabled shortly, as more work is needed for a parliamentary-ready version.
“Similarly, for the Telecommunication Reform Sector, the Telecommunication Amendment Bill and its subsidiary legislation still need some more time for the completion of a parliament-ready version,” the HPS said.
