Remanded on robbery, attempted murder charges

Two of the four-man gang who invaded the mining camp at Five Star Backdam in the North West District last Monday and allegedly robbed and shot a Brazilian national were yesterday remanded to prison.
The two men appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton jointly charged with robbery under arms.

Ashman Scott, 34, of 2 Sophia, and Roger Simon (no address given) were not required to plead to the indictable charges.
One of the charges stated that on July 18, along with two others, at Five Star Backdam, being armed with a dangerous weapon, they robbed Celson Chavez DaSilva of one .32 Taurus pistol with seven rounds, all valued at $160,000.
The other charge stated that on July 18, along with two others, at Five Star Backdam, being armed with a dangerous weapon, they robbed Sergo Rodriques Dos Santos of eight ounces of raw gold and a Samsung digital camera, all value at $2.4M, property of Maria De Souza.
The prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the charge and the prevalence of the offences, while Roger Simon was further charged with two indictable charges to which he was not required to plead.
One of the charges reads that, on July 18, at Five Star Backdam, he discharged a loaded firearm at Felix Lasaro Dos Santos, with intent to commit murder.
The other charge stated that on the same day, he discharged a loaded firearm with intent to disfigure, disable and cause actual bodily harm to Felix Lasaro Dos Santos.
The prosecutor objected to bail. The magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecutor and bail was refused for all the charges against Scott and Simon.
The matters were transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate Court for August 22.
