Broadcasting Bill tabled in National Assembly

-to promote freedom of expression and rights to information
THE long-awaited Broadcasting Bill which will make provision for the establishment of the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority was Thursday evening tabled in the National Assembly by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds.
The Authority will be responsible for the regulation, supervision and development of the National Broadcasting System which will provide for the licencing of broadcasting agencies and encouraging production and broadcasting of television and radio programmes.
The Act shall also be construed and applied in a manner that is consistent with the right to freedom of expression and journalistic ethics, and the provision and production of quality and balanced information for the Guyanese public.
The Bill, which will enhance transparency in government and the promotion of freedom of expression, will introduce a new regime for regulating and facilitating enterprise in the broadcasting sector, while at the same time ensuring that all radio and television stations continue to play their traditional role of educating, informing and entertaining the community.
