MUCH has been made of GECOM’s reopening of registration on Monday July 25, 2011. In fact, many of the opposition parties, in perhaps, the most asinine way conceivable view this exercise as the government seeking to delay the holding of the 2011 elections. It is in the interest of every party contesting the elections that every citizen is allowed the opportunity to vote.
No one should, in anyway, feel disenfranchised thereby allowing those parties who will lose to cry foul and resort to chaos and pandemonium in the streets of Georgetown.
The reopening of registration will not affect the holding of elections in a timely manner – it will merely ensure all are given the right to exercise their franchise.
Additionally, this decision was taken with the support of several commissioners, including an opposition nominated one.
It did not require the Chairman’s vote. This runs contrary to opposition claims of government forcing its will on GECOM.
The fact is that Guyanese are aware of the sinister agenda and ‘politricks’ of these opposition parties who will stop at nothing to be an obstacle in the path of progress.
And therefore, these parties who are against the reopening of the registration must be assessed for their true intentions. Perhaps they will look for an excuse to create mayhem when they lose the elections.
I will be seeking to register in order to vote.
