Digicel Classic on this Sunday

… Over $10M in cash and prizes to be won
COME this Sunday, the Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club (NSMTC) which is located at Bel Air, Number Six Village in West Berbice, will come alive when the inaugural Digicel horse racing Classic gallops off from 12:00hrs, with over $10M in cash and prizes up for grabs.
According to Public Relations Manager of Digicel (Guyana) Inc. Shonnet Moore, her company, having sponsored several horse race meetings in the past, was approached by numerous organisers with regard to having their own meet, hence the Digicel Classic this Sunday.
“Today, Digicel is pleased to announce the running-off of their Classic on Sunday at the NSMTC, where over $10M in cash and prizes will be up for grabs. We decided to organise this event, since we were approached by numerous organisers, with regard to doing same.
“We partnered with NSMTC for this year’s event where over 100 horses will be battling it out for cash and prizes in the 10 events set for the day, with the view of having a bigger and better event next year.”
Organising Secretary of NSMTC, Compton Sancho, said the day’s card which will have two feature events run in the B Class and Three-Years-Old Guyana and West Indies-bred horses, will be run under the auspices of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) and sponsored exclusively by Digicel.
For the B Class event, a first prize of $1.2M will be awarded to the winner after completing a distance of 1600 metres and will see horses of the calibre of Marathon Man, Wada Luck, Night Crescendo, Miss Oriente, Face the Music, Ambush Baby and crowd favourite The Message.
Better than Gold, Sabrina Joy, Spanish Love, Big Impact, Northern Driver and Face the Fire among other horses, will enter the starting gates for the Three-Years-Old feature event – the second of two for the day – and carries a first prize of $600 000.
According to the GHRA regulations, seven horses must face the starter in order for a fourth place prize to be paid while five horses must face the starter if a third place prize is paid, while the organising club reserves the right to cancel or reframe any race mentioned on the programme for the day.
Having concluded their inaugural nationwide Inter-Secondary School football tournament, Digicel, who thrives under the slogan ‘Bigger, Better Network’, is wasting no opportunity in proving to telecommunication users, their total commitment to sports in Guyana with this event.
Bell-time on Sunday is 12:00hrs and all horses for the first event, which is the B Class feature, are asked to be in the observation paddock for 11:45hrs.
