AS part of the preparations for its 36th General Conference, the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) is conducting a three-day seminar.
It began yesterday and ends tomorrow. This is to allow the national commissions to update their knowledge about the organization and to share their work experiences and practices.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Education Minister Shaik Baksh noted that the Guyana Government is highly appreciative of the works being done by UNESCO countrywide.
The minister added that despite the many challenges here, UNESCO has proven to be one of Guyana’s greatest allies.
He said that the meetings will focus on the fundamental roles and tasks of the national commissions and UNESCO’s programme and working procedures.
The participants will learn of the overall improvements of UNESCO’s preparation, strategy and actions towards partnerships with civil society.
At the seminar are participants from Antigua,The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, The British Virgin Islands, and Guyana.
As the regional and sub regional workshops are normally held in the year of UNESCO’s general conference, it is also an opportunity for the national commissions to prepare themselves for the forthcoming biennial gathering at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
UNESCO believes that, through this sub regional training seminar, their main objectives will be achieved.
