Ananka Hintzen (no address given) was remanded to prison on Thursday by Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with trafficking in narcotics.
The woman pleaded not guilty to the offence and particulars stated that on June 25, at Skeldon, Berbice, she trafficked 1 kilogram 40 grammes of cocaine. Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said that on the day in question, the substance was found in one of the suitcases of Shirley Yurrick, who was in Guyana to attend a funeral and was returning home to the United States on a Delta Airlines flight.
Pindar added that the suitcase was checked by ranks from the narcotics branch, who found two tins labelled mauby and passion fruit concentrate. They extracted the tins and found they contained the drug.
Pindar said further investigations were conducted which led to the arrest of the defendant, Ananka Hintzen, who admitted giving the tins to Yurrick. Based on advice from the DPP, the defendant was arrested and charged.
The prosecutor objected to bail and requested that the matter be transferred to the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
The magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution and bail was refused. The matter was transferred to The Springlands Magistrate’s Court for July 7.
