TWO men and one woman yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer a charge of conspiracy to commit a felony with kidnapping.
The police are alleging that between June 1 and 25, Carl Krishna, Vishnu Ramnarine and Susan Kalimootoo (no addresses given) conspired together to kidnap Christopher Mohabir, by attempting to wrongfully confine him and to demand a ransom of between $50M and $60M. The trio were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Defence Counsel Mr. Vic Puran represented Krishna and Mr. Jerome Khan represented Ramnarine. Kalimotoo was unrepresented.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunte, prosecuting, told the court that the police are in possession of a tape recorder which was used to record the conversation of all three accused while they were planning to kidnap the virtual complainant.
He said the virtual complainant is the son of a businessman who owns a lumber yard. He had no objection to bail, but requested a substantial amount.
Bail was granted in the sum of $400,000 to all three accused on the condition that they report to the police station and surrender their passports until the termination of the matter. The case will be called again on July 21.
Meanwhile, as the three accused were making their way down to the lock-up, the virtual complainant’s father, who was outside the court, became upset after he learnt that the accused were allowed bail.
The virtual complainant’s father was taken into police custody for allegedly using indecent language, but no information was given as to whether he was charged.
