EUDELL Fiedtkou, 13, of Lot 163 Unity Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara, was electrocuted at his home, on Monday night, while fixing a light.
His mother, Orpha Husbands, who was inconsolable yesterday, said it happened about 19:00 hrs when she was in their house and learnt that the bulb under the house was not lighting and Eudell volunteered to fix it. The grieving woman said, a few minutes later, she heard her son screaming and, by the time she rushed downstairs, he was already on the ground trembling.
The form two student of Patentia Secondary School, also on West Bank Demerara, was hurled from the point of contact, by the volume of electricity that surged through his body, after he came into contact with a live wire that was exposed while he was attempting to install the bulb.
Husbands, who has seven children, said she discarded the live conduit and picked up her lifeless son, who had a hole in his chest.
He was rushed to West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The deceased was the eldest of five children she bore from a relationship with Lester Fiedtkou, who is working in the interior.
The dead teen would have celebrated his 14th birthday on August 8.
Described as very friendly and adorable, as news of his demise spread, his friends in and around the village were in utter dismay as his mother emerged, outside her home, from a taxi after visiting La Grange Police Station, where she had gone to report the occurrence.
Some of them, shocked after her revelation amidst tears, were at a loss for words and joined in crying openly.
Attempts were being made to contact the dead teen’s father as a post mortem examination is expected to be performed on the corpse today.
Some years ago, a mother and son of the same village died in similar circumstances after getting into contact with a live wire. The mother had tried to save the son when they both perished.
But accidental electrocutions are now more prevalent among persons trying to make illegal electricity connections. (Michel Outridge)
