Notable progress reported in stray catching campaign

THE stray catching campaign, which kicked off last year, has made notable progress since the Ministry of Home Affairs rehabilitated and built pounds.
The construction, at a cost of $13.5M, followed passage, in April 22, 2010, of the Pounds (Amendment) Bill.
Presented in the National Assembly by Minister with the portfolio, Mr. Clement Rohee, the legislation increased the fee for a stray catcher or any other person, who takes animals, including horses, cows, sheep and goats, to a pound, from $1,000 to $5,000 each.
The Stray Catcher Unit at the Ministry is responsible for overseeing the campaign.
Prior to the amendment, the Act was last revised in 2007, raising the fee per animal from $30 to $1,000.
In 2009, the Home Affairs Ministry built or rehabilitated 17 pounds across Guyana.
