…younger brother severely injured
A schoolgirl who held her brother’s hand while on their way home from the Cotton Tree Primary School was killed instantly by a speeding motorcar, pinning her under its wheels and crashing into a concrete fence on the West Coast of Berbice. A source, who was contacted by the relatives of the driver, told this newspaper that he fled the scene after being threatened by villagers armed with cutlasses. He is currently wanted by the police.
Fourth Grader Jasmattie Ramnauth , 9, of 7 Ketting Reserve ,D Edward Village, died instantly ,while her younger brother, Vayjai, a Grade Two student , was taken to the Fort Wellington Cottage Hospital, before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, having suffered severe injuries to his head and feet.
Eyewitness said the siblings were walking on the right hand side of the road, when the motor vehicle PMM 8812, coming from the opposite direction, ran into them. Vayjai was flung several feet in the air, while Jasmattie was pinned under the front wheels of the car.
The vehicle smashed a power pole plunging the area into a blackout.
Witnesses said when the vehicle halted the driver, a known character, fled the scene, leaving his vehicle and the injured children behind.
Residents quickly picked up the unconscious Vayjai
and rushed him to the nearby health facility.
The vehicle had to be lifted by able-bodied men, who removed the already dead girl from beneath its wheels.
Over at their home, their mother, Dhanwattie, a house wife, was too shocked to speak and had to be comforted by neighbours and relatives, while the father, Dyanand, questioned why his children had to suffer in this way.
The children has left to mourn their other siblings Shivraj, 16; Javid 14; Lakeram, 12; Kalawattie 6 and Andrew, 3 years.
The police are investigating.
