GuySuCo on track for best first-crop output in six years

THE Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) may this year achieve its highest ever first-crop production in the last six years with some 106,286 tonnes milled as of Thursday out of a target of 138,791 tonnes.
This is according to sources within the sugar industry who were present Thursday at the ceremony
commemorating the death anniversary of the Enmore Martyrs, at Enmore on the East Coast of Demerara.
Those sources confirmed that sugar production for this crop is at 106,286 tonnes up to Thursday, and that the targeted 138,791 tonnes might be reachable, given that three estates are still in operation.
This first-crop production figure as at Thursday is the highest in the past six years, sources noted, as in the years 2002, 2003 and 2004, production was 128,699 tonnes, 127,961 tonnes and 127,610 tonnes respectively.
By the end of the second crop this year, the industry has targeted itself to produce 298,879 tonnes.
Sources believe the achievement of this year’s target is dependent on adequate cane in the fields, and the ability of the Skeldon factory to crush those reaped at an acceptable tonnes-cane-to-tonnes-sugar ratio. (JE)
