Government has responded well to the Lethem disaster

THE weather in its continuing sage of changing patterns in the world, wreaking suffering in peoples’ lives and decimations of nature, has now visited us after its ghastly visits to several states in the USA, in Africa, Haiti, in  Japan and some Pacific Islands, leaving destruction of billions in property and thousands of lives lost.  Yet its visit to Guyana, in our interior region of Lethem so far is mild when compared to those in the international community. Yet for us Guyanese, not accustomed to many strikes by nature, it is still a hard one.  First, we must give thanks to the Creator of  Humanity, God Almighty, that so far there has been no loss in human lives.  Our interior citizens used stealth and wisdom to move smartly.  For us, definitely our people lost tens of millions of dollars in properties, farms, stocks, and many are displaced.  It will take a great deal of effort and resources to reconstruct, and to re-establish lives and farms.
This thrashing by nature is what makes me sad, to witness the plight and loss of our people.  The confusion, the desperation, not knowing what tomorrow will bring fills my heart with intense human pain, and I am sure of all citizens of the Great Country we call HOME!! Nature can revisit with its rains, or even winds, though we are accustomed to much high winds, we must remember, the world’s weather pattern is changing; anything could happen.  Good thoughts and vibrations sent in the universe in the form of prayers or meditation are known to help. we must pray as a people and always have goodness in our hearts.  The bad weather must not revisit these people again or any of our citizens.  This is my prayer my Lord God, Creator.
I feel great and blessed because our government answered with power and statesman-like talents.  Pledging tens of millions for our people who are hurt in Lethem, and support for six months, and more $$$ support and more months if necessary.  What else can we want from a Government?  How else can they respond on behalf of the people of this nation, and the electorate who placed them there?
The swift action of government filled my heart with great personal pride and universal joys bubbled in my heart, and from what I know most Guyanese, nay, all I should say that I spoke to.  All are happy.  Some, and even this writer is disappointed that we were not called to help.  Our Government, with its great and huge heart took the responsibility on  its own, of course with the taxes we paid, as a people, and this shows to the taxed peoples where their monies go, in addition to hospitals, their maintenance, extensions, health centres, the staff for all, the teachers, the roads and highways, schools, institutes university, etc. etc.
I looked and saw how the Prime Minister took control and management, and how the minister with various teams from ministries and the Civil Defence Commission moved with professionalism to bring instantly needed relief in the form of food, of medicines and provide potable water, and medical outreaches to prepare for water-borne diseases.  It was most heartening.
I must also note that it is pleasant that some opposition parties have also gone to Lethem to try and help.  I believe this is the way we should work.
Most heartening to note is that despite the fact that our President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo was out of the country on important Guyanese and world matters, some having to do with climate change, he is much engrossed in what is happening here, and is advising on actions to be taken to help our peoples in Lethem, and also being advised on what is happening on the scene.
Our patriot, freedom fighter, and a most honourable Son of Guyana, Mr. Samuel Archibald Hinds, Prime Minister, former President, former Minister of Home Affairs is personally on the ground in Lethem from the commencement of the floods and is in charge of all relief activities, and of lifting the morale of the people.  The people of this country must take note.  Where great leaders are concerned it is said, “Great Men are not recognised even by their own”.  He truly deserves the national award that was announced for him.  I am so proud of all the other ministers involved.
Call on the people for support and you will find a flurry of gift items, goods, clothing and money, even volunteers to serve.  In times of misfortune the heart and souls of Guyanese open and human kindness pours out.  If we can do this for the people in India, Africa or the Caribbean; then why not for our very own?
So fellow Guyanese, see what I mean.  I am sad at the loss of property and lifestyles of our citizens in Lethem, but I feel great at the response of our Government, and the sympathies of our citizens, and even that of some of the  Opposition.  The outpouring of love and support from our citizens is truly overwhelming.  Thank god for our government, and our taxpayers.
