TWO ranks attached to the Coast Guard unit of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and a civilian are in police custody after they were nabbed with ammunition on the Railway Embankment at Plaisance Village on the East Coast of Demerara. The soldiers, a lance corporal and a private , as well as the other man, were arrested around 18:30hrs on Tuesday by police ranks who had observed them acting suspiciously and stopped and searched them.
The search unearthed a box containing 113 7.62 x 39 rounds of ammunition, according to a police release.
The GDF, which has had its fair share of weapons and ammunition gone missing in the past, is reportedly conducting its own investigations to determine whether the find is from their stock.
Police have said too,that ranks, while conducting a search on a house at D’ urban Backlands in the city, about 19:55hrs also on Tuesday, found an unlicensed 9mm. pistol and two magazines.
A man was arrested and is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
And at about 23:00hrs the same day, a police patrol stopped and searched three men who were seen acting in a suspicious manner at Diamond Access Road on the East Bank of Demerara..
A knife and a pair of scissors were found in their possession and subsequent investigations led to the recovery of an unlicensed .22 revolver with six matching rounds.
The men were taken into police custody and are assisting as the investigations continue
