TOSHAO of Bethany, Mr. Wendel Thomas has indicated that he will be stepping down from the office on July 31. According to a report presented by Community Development Officer for Amerindian Communities, Ms. Melrose Henry, at the Hinterlands Affairs Committee meeting on Monday, Thomas has not attended meetings for several months despite being spoken to on several occasions, by officers of the Hinterland Department.
Henry told others at the forum that Thomas said he cannot be a leader of his community any longer because of personal business and family commitments.
Bethany, situated several miles South along Supenaam Creek, has a population of 400 and the main activities in the village are logging and farming.
Government spent millions of dollars, recently, under the Poor Rural Community Support Services Programme (PRCSSP) to drain and impolder several hundred acres of virgin forested lands to boost agriculture development.
