Sammy missing for second year straight

CASTRIES, St Lucia CMC – Injury will sideline West Indies captain Darren Sammy for the Windward Islands Twenty20 competition, which got under way in Dominica yesterday. The all-rounder was named captain of a 13-member squad selected last week, but was forced to withdraw after picking up a back injury while playing for West Indies in the second Test against Pakistan in St Kitts, where the visitors won by 196 runs last Tuesday.
”Darren has a slight back strain, which he has opted to rest before the start of India’s tour of the Caribbean,” St Lucia coach Brian Calixte told CMC Sports.
Sammy, who also missed the inaugural Windwards T20 competition last year due to a leg injury, has been replaced by another all-rounder Keitha Prospere, and experienced left-arm spinner Garey Mathurin will lead the side.
St Lucia will open their campaign of the round-robin contest against the hosts Dominica in the first match of a double-header set for Windsor Park which will be followed by a match between St Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada.
Squad:
Garey Mathurin (captain), Alex Antoine, Johnson Charles, Craig Emmanuel, Sergio Fedee, Xavier Gabriel, Sherlon Isidore, Keddy Lesporis, Denis Louis, Dalton Polius, Gaspard Prospere, Keitha Prospere, Mervin Wells.
