THE Guyana Relief Council (GRC) recently received a donation of a 40-foot container consisting of household materials and supplies from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This was done in an ongoing effort to ease trauma strains suffered by persons in Guyana, whose lives were either disrupted or disturbed by natural or man-made disasters.
The donation which was handed over by the Church’s Humanitarian Society consisted of a quantity of clothing, shoes, hygiene kits, school supplies, baby kits, cuddly toys, household items and blankets valued at $14,858,400 GYD. The donation also included items bought locally such as mattresses, beddings, and kitchenware along with children’s story books valued at $891,580 GYD.
It is estimated that more than 1,600 persons from the ten administrative regions of Guyana will benefit from this humble donation, particularly those fire victims who lost their homes to merciless flames.
Chairperson of the GRC, Mrs. Yvonne Hinds, who addressed the gathering of members representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, GRC staff and the press, expressed her gratitude for the 40-foot container of goods and supplies.
She added that this donation will assist the families throughout Guyana who struggle from man-made and/natural disasters and other calamities experienced by society.
Mrs. Hinds noted that for this year the GRC, a non-profit and charitable organisation, has assisted approximately 37 family households totalling 166 persons and that the donation has come in handy for assisting persons and families in need.
She added that the GRC was approached and offered the donation by the foreign-based church, which was established in Guyana in 1988, and that this was the first ever venture between the GRC and the church’s Humanitarian Services Department.
The Humanitarian Services Department of the church has long been actively involved in humanitarian relief and in development activities around the globe and Guyana was definitely not left out of its thoughts.
