SOME media houses in Guyana are lawless and irresponsible. I say this because from the way the news is presented to the public, one would think that in all these years Guyana has been stagnated and nothing except the Government has changed. We would all welcome objectivity and unbiased reports, but these media houses are most often than not, misrepresenting facts and twisting them to support their own selfish motives.
In any country, criticism of government policies and programmes are welcome, because this serves as a measure to keep them in line and ensure accountability. However, in Guyana, objective criticisms are a figment of one’s imagination because some media houses take the simplest of issues and turn it into a political thing, playing on people’s emotions to create imbalance in the scheme of things.
No one would want wrongdoings to be hidden, but come on! The media has a responsibility to the people to present accurate information on issues. The Stabroek News and Kaieteur News are guilty of time and again, downplaying efforts to develop and modernize Guyana. All Guyanese can see for themselves the vast development over the years, in every sphere of life and they can judge for themselves what is wrong and what is right. But seeing these issues presented the way they are just makes me see that these newspapers have their own agendas which they are trying to push.
The papers don’t find legitimate issues to follow; they are nitpicking, following every little issue like a rough street, while leaving out the bigger picture. Guyana has many bad streets, but it’s also true that there are better roads than in the past and even in places where there were no streets, there are many now. We have a far way to go, but we have come a very far way in recent years. The work is not yet done, and government continues to do much good for its people.
Why can’t these people take the good with the bad and show it as it really is? They claim to be objective and credible but all these publications show is that they are set against the Government and come what may, they do not intend to change their line. Even if they try to portray that they are unbiased, it shows in their publications every day.
