THE Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) sends greetings to all Guyanese, especially those persons of Indian origin, on the 173rd Anniversary of the arrival of Indian Immigrants (Bharatiyaan) to this country. Between May 5, 1838, and April 1917, approximately 239,000 Bharatiyaan were brought to the former colony of British Guiana, on 245 ships, which made a total of 534 voyages across the Kaalaa Paanii. Approximately 77,000 returned to India between 1843 and 1955, the remainder settling in this country.
After 1917, a few thousand persons from the Indian sub-continent arrived here, bringing with them their religions, their culture, their customs and traditions.
The IAC, a registered non-governmental organization established in 2003, deals primarily with the issues and concerns of people of Indian origin, and has three foci: cultural, educational, and social.
As part of its cultural focus, the IAC strives at all time to promote and preserve Indian culture in Guyana.
