THE PEOPLE’S Progressive Party (PPP), in extending best wishes to all Guyanese and the Christian Community on the occasion of Easter, has likened Christ’s quest to spread Christianity to the party’s struggle for national unity, in that though both were initially harassed at every turn, they both won out in the end.
The following is the full text of the party’s Easter message:
“This story of Easter is one of hope and victory of life over death.
Christ was crucified because of his teachings. He challenged orthodoxy. The hope was that with his death, his teachings would have also died. However, today, Christianity is one of the main religions in the world.
“In reflecting on our own history, the PPP’s advocacy for national unity was often criticized, and our party faced many attacks. Our leaders faced jail and harassment in promoting a message of peace, love and unity. Those machinations failed.
“Today, we are building a country where the values of human rights are respected and upheld; a country in which there is equal opportunities for all; a society in which ‘the colour of a person’s skin is of no more significance than the colour of their eyes…’
“We are now realising the dream of generations of our leaders. These values correspond to many of the teachings of Christ.
