Meusa, Khan to meet in CCI final this weekend

FORMER national champion Wendell Meusa, who has a World Chess Federation (FIDE) rating of 1928, and current national champion Taffin Khan (1802) will meet over the chess board this weekend in the Caribbean Container INC. (CCI)-sponsored Guyana Chess Federation (GCF)-organised Easter Chess tournament at the Kei-shar’s Sports Club. The result of the match-up between Khan and Meusa may finally determine who will be awarded the CCI’s championship trophy, with the overall winner being announced after the final round this Sunday at the same venue.
With three more rounds to go, Khan and Meusa both remained undefeated among the seniors with four wins each, after the fourth game of the seven-round tournament was completed Tuesday evening.
Meusa defeated Shiv Nandalall (1715) during their encounter while the young Khan gained a walkover from his opponent, Alex Joseph, and after four rounds, the points standing is as follows: Meusa and Taffin Khan four points each, Pierre Boucher 3½ points, Nandalall 1½ points, David Khan (1386) and Alex Joseph one point each, with Haatram Parbatt and Chino Chung yet to score.
The competition is FIDE-rated and the process to acquire FIDE rankings will commence for some players, since four of the senior participants in the tournament namely Meusa, Taffin and David Khan and Nandalall are FIDE-rated.
The winner of the junior category will also be announced at the end of the three remaining rounds this weekend, with North Georgetown Secondary School student Su Hai Feng being the sole leader among the juniors with four wins after four rounds.
