IN perfect contradistinction to what took place when PNCR’s Robert Corbin emasculated David Granger at the meet with Eric Solheim, PPP’s already clear-cut unity was further enhanced. This, of course, is a most auspicious presage for the rapidly burgeoning nation of Guyana. At that now infamous (for the PNCR) meet, presidential candidate, David Granger, was relegated to a role of insignificance. Instead of his taking the mantle of leadership, he was reduced by jealousy-apparent, Robert Corbin. One can be sure that sensible Guyanese will now be loath to invest in and develop trust for the PNCR. This is exactly the opposite of what transpired, and continues to transpire within the PPP, as leadership for Guyana continues to be a priority.
First, there seems to be an inveterate coherence that inheres within the PPP. When stalwarts like Gail Texeira, Ralph Ramkarran and Clement Rohee unswervingly gave credence and support to Donald Ramotar, it presupposes a unified milieu among the leadership within the PPP.
While detractors, skeptics and enemies may seek to explicate the “whys” and the “hows” of what took place on Monday (last week), the better and salutary picture should not be made murky. So one must be cognizant of a number of important issues, the chief of which is ‘unity.’ This all-important aspect of unity has at least two implications, and both are necessary criteria for Guyana’s on-going ascent at all levels.
For one, the obvious, manifested unity, in unanimously selecting the presidential candidate demonstrates that the PPP is enjoying an internal camaraderie and fraternity that really bode well for supporters, and consequently, the nation as a whole.
This leadership cadre is really saying that there is a prevailing unity of persons, purpose, politics and philosophy. With such a well-knitted structure, the PPP will now be able to make good the adage that says “make me happy and you make me good.”
What this further means is that with the elimination of any possible friction, petty jealousies and other personal peccadilloes, negative energy will not be present to stymie plans for the nation: all and sundry will join forces in expediting national projects.
The second import of this unity is that it creates a national canopy under which the country will move, and has been moving. Contrary to cavillers and carpers, the Jagdeo administration did not waver from that of the Jagans in anyway whatsoever; there were noticeable and successful continuity in nation-building, racial bridging, and international image.
Yes, the late Cheddi Jagan has a different personality and style from that of Jagdeo, but personalities do not have to and must not contradict democratic goals and agendas. Donald Ramotar’s style seems the antithesis of his soon to be predecessor.
Yet his unanimity of selection confirms his suitability and readiness for the job of presidency. So irrespective of style and personality, his agenda and obsession will be very nationally oriented. Here again, there will be no Ramotar versus Jagdeo tenure, as there was no Jagdeo versus Jagan one. It is leadership by, and visions of, the PPP.
Finally, one must never forget that when President incumbent, Bharrat Jagdeo was inaugurated, he was denigrated by the ‘hasty’ and ‘hostile.’
This goes with the territory. Will it be different for Donald Ramotar? The answer is a resounding ‘no.’ Will he be able to focus? The answer is an emphatic ‘yes.’ This is because he has been in politics for aeons, he is truly a Guyanese who transcends race, and he is experienced, pragmatic and qualified.
