THE Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, through the National Trust of Guyana has planned several activities to commemorate International Day for Monuments and Sites which will be observed on April 18, under the theme ‘Cultural Heritage of Water’. The day is designated to raise awareness about heritage sites and monuments globally by ICOMOS and UNESCO.
The activities planned for the event are as follow: Heritage Conscious walk from Guyana National Museum to Seawall Bandstand; Exhibition and Launch of Heritage Stickers and three tours in Georgetown, to the Lighthouse, Stabroek Market tower and parts of Water Street.
In response to a proposal made by ICOMOS to United National, April 18 was endorsed as The International Day for Monuments and Sites by UNESCO in 1983.
This special day offers an opportunity to raise public awareness concerning the diversity of the national heritage and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve it, as well as to draw attention to its vulnerability.
This event is being observed in Guyana annually.
