Minister Baksh updates hinterland residents on Gov’t plans for education sector
EDUCATION Minister Mr. Shaik Baksh, during a recent outreach to Regions Eight and Nine and their sub-communities, has re-affirmed Government’s commitment to ensuring that every child receives primary, secondary and tertiary education. While addressing a large gathering at Tipuru, he said that issues such as the rehabilitation of the area’s school; an additional solar panel and a water pump will be addressed shortly so as to ensure that the sanitary block functions optimally.
“If we are to get a child friendly school, the first thing is to have proper water supply in the school, for sanitation purposes. I have had a good discussion with the head (teacher) and we will be sending 24 students to write the grade six exams in Georgetown and I wish them good luck,” Minister Baksh said.
The issue of accommodation was also raised, and the subject minister added that this year, several dormitories will be expanded to better facilitate students from the hinterland.
This move by Government, he said will pave the way for each child to receive quality education in order to better contribute to society.
He encouraged the parents to ensure that each child attends school regularly to obtain quality education, noting that Government will also be monitoring the distribution of text books to schools since this must be done in a timely manner.
With respect to Government’s school feeding programme, Minister Baksh said the programme will continue this year.
“My strong message to the villagers is to ensure that each child goes to school since we are going to be really stringent on parents. This is a major issue and the Government will be taking a no nonsense approach,” he said.
Minister Baksh also made a visit to the Mahdia Secondary school, updating the residents about Government’s plans for the school.
He also indicated that this year Government will be training another 2000 teachers in information technology.
“Within the next year when you have the computer laboratory here, you will have two quality teachers to teach Information Technology,” Minister Baksh told Mahdia residents.
The residents lauded Government for its support to the communities over the years, noting that significant improvements were recorded in all the sectors, resulting in the lives of Amerindians being better off today. (GINA)
