Man bonded after estranged lover withdraws charges

SEYMOUR Gilkes (no address given) who faced charges of unlawful assault and simple larceny before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday had them dismissed. But he was put on a bond to keep the peace for one year, with the warning that failure to comply would result in him being imprisoned for three months.
That happened after the virtual complainant, Elsa Greaves told the court she did not wish to proceed with the cases.
Gilkes had pleaded not guilty to having, on April 5, stolen a cell phone valued $15,000 and $2,000 from Greaves, whom he also unlawfully assaulted to cause her actual bodily harm.
Police Inspector Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said Gilkes and Greaves had shared a relationship but the offences were committed when the former asked the latter to return money he had given her, dealt the woman several slaps and took away the cash and the phone.
The prosecutor pointed out that Gilkes and his estranged lover live next door to each other.
