Farmer loses $200,000 paddy in toppled trailer

RICE farmer Pooran Persaud, of Devonshire Castle, lost 140 bags of paddy after a trailer loaded with the produce toppled into a drainage canal while crossing an Essequibo Coast bridge on Sunday. Persaud, who is a member of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) said he was transporting grains from the harvest on his eight acres plot when disaster struck.

He said the wooden overpass apparently buckled under the weight of the loaded vehicle and he and his sons, together with other farmers, worked late into Sunday night to salvage some of the paddy from in the canal.
Persaud, who estimated his loss at some $200,000, said farmers in Walton Hall are facing serious problems to get their paddy out of the backdam because of the muddy and poor state of the earthen dam.
