– despite suspicion, mother hopes fisherman is found
– Guyanese crew members, vessel detained by Surinamese authorities
AUTHORITIES in Suriname have started an investigation, including several searches, for Guyanese fisherman Rohan Dianand, who is reported to have fallen overboard in the neighbouring country on Tuesday. His mother, Indranie Dianand, 54, of Lot 73 Latchmansingh Street, Lusignan, told the Guyana Chronicle, yesterday, that he left home 20 days ago to go on a fishing trip with a crew of six, all Guyanese and was expected back home today.
But the fishing boat owner, who resides at Mon Repos, also on the East Coast of Demerara, visited her on Wednesday afternoon and reported authorities in the country had made contact with him, through the boat captain, to inform that her son was missing at sea.
She said, at the time of his falling, the boat was anchored at a wharf in Suriname and he disappeared while the other crew members were sleeping.
The woman said the other crew and the vessel are all in custody in Suriname and the search for her son was continuing up to press time but she expects to travel there today to join in the efforts to locate him, as well.
She said she suspects that something sinister has happened to her son and that his fellow fishermen know about it.
It is her belief that there was some dispute and her son was brutally murdered and dumped in the deep.
She said her son is an excellent swimmer, having spent many years at sea and, if he fell overboard, he would have been able to survive.
She disclosed that the disappeared man has been working at sea since he was 16 years old and would return home for a week and a half before leaving again.
According to her, he “is very free-handed” and, whenever he returns from a trip at sea, he would assist the less fortunate.
Despite her suspicion, she is, however, hoping that the 37-year-old unmarried man, alias ‘Bo Bo’, is alive and would be found.
