After Sunday prison fight…

Erskine assures of measures to deal with such brawls
PRISONS Chief Dale Erskine told the Guyana Chronicle, after the fight between two high profile prisoners that led to a brawl in the Camp Street, Georgetown Penitentiary on Sunday, that measures are in place to deal with such incidents.
He said they have to deal with some 1,000 prisoners in the jail and, although the officers are trained, there is a need for them to always be alert because they are not always aware of grouses amongst the prisoners.

The Director said that they had no knowledge of the problem between the two who attacked each other, causing one to be injured but, in future, they will be separated to prevent a recurrence.
Erskine said the combatants met in the yard during the visiting hour and there is where they fought on Sunday.

He reiterated that trained prison wardens have been doing a lot to maintain order within, knowing that fights are just a distraction from outbreaks.

On Monday, remanded prisoner Randy Joseph, 27 of Buxton, East Coast Demerara was wounded and treated in the infirmary by Jermaine Jerrick, one of those accused of executing armed robberies at Aranka in the hinterland.

Joseph is a former Buxton gang member who escaped death several times during encounters with law enforcement authorities and rival gangs during the crime wave a few years ago.
