THE Ministry of Health has deployed a roving, medical surgical team again to Mabaruma in Region One (Barima/Waini) with the aim of providing medical support to those in need. The team of 11 left the Ogle airport early yesterday morning for Mabaruma via a chartered flight with medical personnel that include Dr. Fawcett Jeffrey – Orthopaedic surgeon; Dr Sheik Amir – General surgeon, trained theatre nurses, and anaesthetic personnel,among others.
Also returning to Mabaruma on the flight was Dr. Rupesh Chandrika, one of the newest Cuban trained Guyanese doctors. He is stationed at Mabaruma.
The team is headed by Drs. Jeffrey and Amir and will be performing several surgeries on patients who have already been identified and screened for various ailments.
Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran accompanied the team to the Ogle Airport to send them off. He said the initiative is in keeping with government’s principle of delivering quality and equal access to health care.
The minister said in the latter part of last year the team performed 84 surgeries at the new $300M Mabaruma Hospital. These surgeries included surgical correction of clubfoot, hernia repair, and hysterectomy and bone surgeries.
Dr. Ramsaran lauded the public/private joint effort in this initiative.
He said the team comprises medical personnel from the private hospitals and from within the public health system.
According to a report from the Government Information Agency (GINA), the team of health care providers was expected to commence their work yesterday and will conclude the outreach tomorrow.
