The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) yesterday held its Phagwah Cultural Extravaganza, “Celebrating Our Culture” , with Prime Minister Samuel Hinds in attendance.
The ceremony took place at Umana Yana, Georgetown, and the presentations included prayers, remarks, display of cultural wear, dances, songs, chowtal and bhajans. In his opening remarks, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Aeshwar Deonarine, said that GPL’s culture is rich as Guyana’s and the members of staff all come from different backgrounds and religions, but this festival of good over evil is nevertheless celebrated by all.He spoke of GPL’s involvement in promoting culture locally and remarked that the company won first prize at the Mashramani 2011 Float Parade.
There was a dance performed by first runner-up Miss India Guyana, Shivanie Latchman; a cultural display by GPL staff; dance by Lacresha Rambalak;a skit by GPL staff; a dance by Shivanie Latchman and her brother, Kumar Latchman; tassa drumming by Mangal Raghunandan; and a dance by second runner-up Miss India Guyana, Divya Sieudarsan, who was sponsored by GPL.
The programme was very entertaining and was followed by a skit by GPL’s employees on the significance of Phagwah.
Invitees were treated to sweet meats and entertained by songs.
