Freak accident damages motor car, building in New Amsterdam

A FREAK accident, yesterday morning, resulted in damages to a motor car and the building which houses Sterling Products Limited in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
It happened when a rotten utility pole fell during the wee hours.
Feroze Fazal, who lives at the junction of Republic Road and Trinity Street, told the media he was awakened by a crashing sound about 03:00hrs and, on looking outside, observed that a Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T) pole had fallen into his yard, damaging his grilled fence, a parked ‘Toyota Carina’ and louvre window panes in the lower flat of the two-storey edifice.
He said the impact caused the front portion of the ground floor to shift and make it impossible to close the grill door there.
The businessman said GT&T officials visited the scene and, after assessing the situation, assured that an investigation will be carried out.
Fazal said he would be in a better position to assess the damage after consulting a welder, mechanic and carpenter.
Meanwhile, Guyana Power & Light (GPL) functionaries, who rushed to the scene, expressed relief after seeing that the wooden post did not support any of their lines. (Jeune Bailey Vankeric)
