Ministry concerned at Kaieteur News report on recruitment of overseas teachers

The Ministry of Education has noted with concern reports in some sections of the media on the possible recruitment of overseas teachers to meet critical manpower needs in the areas of Mathematics and Science.
In a press release issued yesterday , the ministry noted  that this announcement was first made by Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon at his weekly press briefing, and was followed by a clear pronouncement by President Bharrat Jadgeo that there would be consultations on the matter before any steps were taken in that direction.
In this regard, the ministry wishes to reiterate President Jadgeo’s pronouncement and note that key stakeholders in the education sector will be consulted, including the Guyana Teachers Union and the Teaching Service Commission, the release said.
“It should be noted that it is the Ministry of Education which develops new policy initiatives and prepares policy documents for discussion and agreement with key stakeholders, including the union and the commission.
“It is within this context that the ministry views the contents of an article in Thursday’s  edition of the Guyana Times headlined “TSC completes criteria document for overseas teachers” which accuses the ministry of not consulting with the union, as being hasty and misleading, and exemplifies poor journalism.
Further, the claim by the Guyana Times that the commission has completed a criteria document for the recruitment of overseas teachers and it will be placed before the cabinet next week is a total fabrication, and can possibly affect the harmonious relations between the union and the ministry, the release concluded.
