Republic Day larceny defendant granted bail
ACTING Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday overruled police objection and granted bail to Republic Day larceny defendant Oswald Banes.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, had objected to the grant, on the ground that Banes has no fixed place of abode but the court set surety at $100,000 after the man said he lives at Lot 366 West Ruimveldt.
The break and enter and larceny charge, to which he pleaded not guilty, said, on February 23, he broke into the bond of Nazim Prashaw and stole 500 pounds of copper, valued $150,000 and 325 pounds of aluminum worth $9,750.
The prosecutor said the virtual complainant saw the defendant removing the booty and raised an alarm that led to the arrest of the latter.
In addition to lodging the bail money, Banes has to report to Brickdam Police Station, also in Georgetown, on Mondays and Fridays until the case is concluded. It will be called, again, on March 15.
